4 Ways to Honor Your Pet on National Pet Memorial Day
If you’re looking for easy yet meaningful ways to honor your deceased animal companion on National Pet Memorial Day, I’ve got you covered.
The following ideas are affordable and accessible, and can create space to allow you to continue processing the loss of your pet:
1. Set out treats and water on an altar
Your pet’s altar can be simple or intricate. I have a few altars throughout my house, and occasionally, I set out food and treats for my departed critters’ spirits on one of them.
Hands-on, creative rituals, such as altar building, can help move grief through the body and provide a beautiful reminder of your friend that you can decorate throughout the year.
2. Take a memorial walk
Set out on a meditative nature walk while keeping your deceased pet in mind. To keep their spirit at the forefront of your thoughts, consider bringing their collar, ashes, a toy, or another item they enjoyed during their life. Take note of anything eye-catching or meaningful you encounter during your walk and consider journaling about your experience when you return.
3. Write them a letter
It’s very common to feel guilt after a pet dies. Sometimes, the best way to work through these emotions is by writing to your deceased pet and telling them what you’re experiencing. Write about everything you’re feeling surrounding their death, and then reflect on how your pet might actually respond.
I truly believe animals are not punitive creatures and inherently understand that their well-meaning humans always have their best interests in mind, that accidents happen, and that we’re all doing the best we can in this deeply imperfect world.
4. Volunteer in their honor
One of the best ways to honor the animal life you miss is by giving time and compassion to an animal that is still on this earth. Consider signing up to volunteer at your local animal shelter or food pantry. While you work, keep your beloved animal in mind and thank them for helping you open your heart to other creatures in need.
Creating a memorial for deceased pets isn’t a one-size-fits-all experience, and there are many different ways to remember animals post-death. So, try to get creative with your grief and remember the love you and your friend shared. I am certain that they cherish the time you spent together as much as you did.
